Sense my space

I cut out shapes on white paper of images I have used before and placed black paper sheet under. It creates shadow image of shapes and I think they are very interesting.

Sense my space

I looked at some other artists mostly photographers who take photographs of people who unaware that they been photographed. One of them is Walker Evans Subway passengers. He takes photographs with small hidden cameras on New York City underground trains (1930s), which allows him to record natural, un-posed faces of people. I think his work is very interesting as he captures peoples personalities, their moods and expressions - bored, curious dreamy, which would be not so easy to do if person would know they been photographed. "The guard is down and the mask is off," he remarked. "Even more than in lone bedrooms (where there are mirrors), people's faces are in naked repose down in the subway." The Subway series as he said is his idea of what portrait has to be: anonymous and documentary and a straightforward picture of mankind.

Philip-Locra di Corcia Heads
Photographs were taken on the streets of New York in 2000, also without their subjects knowledge or permission with hidden cameras and automatic flashes that were triggered as people walked past.
The series was created in Times Square. The lighting he used is very effective and gives cinematic feel. The portraits feel like they been staged. Lighting isolates the subject, leaving the rest of image dark. People who feature in these photos are everyday people going about their daily lives. I really like this way of photography as I think these photos are very honest and reflects city life...blank expressions on peoples faces, contrast to small towns where you can see emotions, relationships, connections....

Vito Acconci Following Piece

Every day for one month in 1969 he followed a randomly selected stranger on the streets of New York, recording his experiences with photographs and a written account. He produces two photographs from the upper (hands over head) and lower (touching toes).

I also looked at work of Henry Cartier Bresson, Garry Winogrand, Stenley Kubrick.

Street photography
Street photography captures people and places within the public domain, street photography is un-posed, un-staged which captures, explores or questions contemporary society and the relationships between individuals and their surroundings. Images should be spontaneous with a minimal interaction between subjects and photographer.

Sense my space

As I said before a part of my investigation for this project was taking photographs. I decided to take photos  of space around me for 24h from same place and then another project where I took photos of space outside my window as well for 24 hours but from different views. I thought I could use these images I took to make a short clips.

Sense my space

I am continuing my work with images I photographed and used before. I have made and painted  larger scale figure and I would like to see how it works when you place it in different spaces and surroundings.

Plaster/Clay Workshop

In this workshop we were able to make a plaster mold.

1. Roll out  a base from clay about 1-1.5cm thickness.
 2. To create a shape of your mold you can press in patterns or cut out shapes etc.

3.  Make sides so plaster can be poured in (sides has to be about 1.5-2cm, strong enough to stop plaster from leaking).

4. Secure all sides with extra clay.
 5. Pour in plaster mix.
 6. Leave it to set and after clay parts can be taken away. Take off any sharp edges.

Plaster mold I made during workshop.

3D Workshop
Today we had a 3D workshop where we could try to work with different kind of materials such as wire, paper, hot glue, string.
 Hand knitting.
Hot glue on black sugar paper. By leaving small bits of paper you can achieve nice effect.

Sense my space

Based on photographs I took before I did some paintings. In some I used only images of people from my photographs because I think they kind of tell story themselves...but then again streets and building around place them in space around...

Sophie Calle

Sophie Calle is a French artist who works with photographs and performances, placing herself  in situations almost as if she and the people she encounters were fictional. She has been called a detective and a voyeur and her pieces involve serious investigations as well as natural curiosity.
Sophie Calle started to follow random people and started to take photographs and write notes about her subjects. Her photographs are displayed with the notes she wrote to go along with each picture. Her pieces tend to display an intimacy between herself and her subjects (as well as the viewers and her subjects) that the subjects are usually not aware they are participating in.

Suite Venitienne, 1980
Is one of her first series of voyeuristic style. She follows a man she met at a party from Paris to Venice and documents his movements, creating a diary of photographs and texts.

She works on other projects such as Hotel (1983) - she works as a chambermaid in a hotel and investigates lives of strangers staying at the hotel.

The Address Book (1983) - this piece was created based on an address book that Calle found, she contacted people in address book and asked them about it's owner, she wanted to create a portrait of this man she never met.

Sense my space

I have decided to try to use wire in my next project. I selected a few images I took before and made figures from wire. I also took few photos of them after moving light to different places so you get shadow image of it. Here are some photos of it.
